Avocado Processing

Driven by dynamics in a global surge in prices and demand for ‘green gold’, the cultivation and trading of avocado is rapidly gaining traction among the farmers in Tanzania. Commercial avocado farming provides an avenue to successfully diversify Tanzania’s portfolio of horticultural crops, thereby enhancing the value of the horticultural industry. The avocado value chain reveals palpable capacity challenges all the way from the input procurement to farming, processing, packaging, retailing and marketing as well as product quality standards. Overcoming these challenges requires keeping up with the constantly changing agribusiness ecosystem. To capture the emerging opportunities in the sector there is an increasing need for innovatively refreshing perspectives to enhance the productivity and competitiveness for all value chain actors as well as improve the product quality to meet export requirements.

FGH Agritech Company has decided to engage in serious, scientific, avocado production in Kagera Region, Tanzania using the latest, proven techniques and technologies to add its quota to improving Tanzania’s competitiveness of avocado (‘green gold’) value chain and exports. To start with, the company has acquired 1,000 acres of land to establish large scale modern avocado farms. The Company has established avocado plant nursery to produce quality Grafted Hass Avocado Seedlings for the Company farm and distribution to smallholder farmers. The Company has a plan to establish outgrowers’ scheme with about 10,000 smallholder farmers throughout the Agro-ecological zone of the Lake Zone with favourable conditions for avocado farming.
